“For You and Yours.”

Sometimes, even the greatest idea just cant be done to budget. (ok, that happens a lot…)

I often feel like that is a real part of the creative process - its worthless unless it can be actually executed. And thats where we stepped in here.

The scripts as is demanded 4-5 different locations across the US, each only at blue hour - the 15 minutes after the sun sets. there was no way we could do this on location with multiple company moves across the US, and traditional sets on a studio were not within budget either.

Ive done a lot of XR work over the last few years, and while its by no means a magic bullet, its an incredible tool. And for this situation it was perfect.

XR allowed us to shoot that perfect 15 minute lighting window all day for days. We created photorealistic interiors of four different architectural styles, perfectly tracked to the camera movement, and could swap between them with one button push and swapping out a few foreground props.

I worked with the incredibly talented Ethan Tobman to design our sets both practically and digitally - separating the architecture into what was digital in real-time on the volume screen, what were physical props, and what was created using visual effects afterwards.

Shooting at MELS in Montreal, the virtual art department created the interiors using Unreal Engine, allowing us complete freedom to move the camera with the digital sets on the XR screen matching perspective and distance perfectly.

This was a perfect example of XR being used for the right reasons: a creative solve to a production issue.
